The Digital Living MA program is delighted to announce our two guest professors for the third annual Aarhus University summer school on Digital Living: Identities and Complexities. Dr. Terri Senft and Dr. Crystal Abidin will facilitate this year’s intensive two-week experience, starting in the beginning of August. Want to drop in on their lectures? Terri Senft is an internationally recognized expert of digital culture who teaches and researches at New York University. In addition to specialty courses in online identity, presentation of self in digital culture, media theory, aesthetics of digital culture, Dr. Senft has an engaging style in broader courses in communication, media, and information studies.
As a well known scholar of internet studies, Dr. Senft studies social networking practices and structures on sites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter. She is particularly interested in how the Internet has been changing our notions of the public, the private, the pornographic, and the pedagogic in contemporary society. She is well known for her work in micro-celebrity practices and the theory of ‘the grab’ as a way of understanding identity in socio-technical contexts.
Crystal Abidin is Postdoctoral Fellow with the Department of Sociology at the National University of Singapore and Affiliated Researcher with the Media Management and Transformation Centre (MMTC) at Jönköping University.
Dr. Abidin focuses on vernacular internet cultures, particularly young people’s relationships with internet celebrity, self-curation, and vulnerability. Recently, she has written about the virality of young children on social media, young people’s expression of grief on the internet, and practices of young coupling in East Asia. She is known for her work on Influencers, a multimedia form of vocational microcelebrity on social media, also commonly known as commercial or professional bloggers, Tweeters, Instagrammers, YouTubers, and the like.
